A Thief In The Night

Daily Rant

This morning at 6am my husband goes out to start his truck for work and makes a grim discovery. The four wheelers that he had just purchased for our family last week were missing from the trailer in the front of our house.

Sick to our stomachs we searched the immediate area & made the necessary calls. Our sleeping boys lie minutes from waking to discover all their hopes & dreams for summer fun had been taken in the night. How was I going to tell them? I dreaded them waking, so I went about my morning very quietly thinking all the while how sad we all were & going to be.

Just a short day agothe boys could not stop raving about their new bikes  & we planned to take them out this weekend for the first time.  Now I had to tell them their hope of driving through the mountain air & with mom & dad were no more. All the desires of their little boy hearts wrapped in metal, plastic & Polaris had been taken by someone to make a quick buck, or get some cheap fun, and they were not coming back & couldn’t be replaced.

You see we don’t make a ton of money & my husband had to work extra jobs & hours to save up this money. Also the pair of quads was a deal too good to be true. We purchased them from a friend at church for WAY under what they were worth. There is no way we could replace them .  I had already spoken to the insurance who informed me that they would not be covered under our home owners insurance since I had not insured them individually yet due to the fact we had not planned on riding them until this weekend.  It is not the law in Colorado to insure them & I was always told they were covered by home owners if stolen. However our insurance company changed this policy in the last year or so to exclude atv’s due to a high theft rate.  Good to know now!

The Police didn’t seem hopeful as apparently there has been a crime spree in the last month in our area of rule quiet Colorado in the ATV Motorcycle department.  These have no titles and are a hard to track quick turn item. Again great to know now!  We assume that the theifs were pros for two reasons ; one we did see a truck stopped out front yesterday but dismissed it (stupid me they were casing the joint) And  two they were able to get two very heavy quads, unstrapped, off the trailer & down the road , On a well lit street with a motion light out front, two dogs in the front room & the windows to our house open wide only 25 feet from the trailer & we never heard a thing.

So here I am having to break the news to my brown eyed babys that some scum bag  has stolen what their father had worked so hard to provide his family. Stolen this weekends plans, taken our money, ripped off our sense of safety, &  crushed the dream of family fourwheeling  fun for years to come.

I simply do not understand how people can live with themselves. They had to step over my sons trike to get to the trailer. Did they not think “Hey there is a hard working family here just trying to make it in this world & maybe provide for their kids”  Or ” What if this was my child’s four wheeler?” No nothing like that crossed their greedy brains I am sure.

All I know is that these people are as low as they come. The area they are hitting is a hard working community, full of families & kids.  You always here it, but I just never thought it would happen here. This has never happened to us so I am not sure how to feel myself , and I have to make it all make sense to my small children. Let them know the world isn’t a very safe place, that there are people out there that would hurt them, steel from them ,and that are nothing short of scum. I have to do this however with out scaring them to death.  I have not planned this out but I better think fast I hear pitter patter from up stairs. Deep breath here we go……….

Wow! That is horrible, I could just imagine how upset your family was. I wouldn’t know what to do either, sad to say you can’t leave your posessions without locks and chains!
