The Cantina by Campbell’s – Pop-up Restaurant in Toronto

Amazing Events, Kids & Family - Mama 1 - February 1, 2016

If you’re like me, you’ll try almost anything to get your kids eating reasonably healthy – the whole hiding spinach in the spaghetti sauce trick. Like any kids they can be picky sometimes, and everyone wants something different. But I think the new pop-up restaurant opening tomorrow will be just the place to take them for lunch.

The Cantina by Campbell’s will feature original recipes, by Chef Matt Dean Pettit, using Campbell’s soups and broths. And Chef Matt has designed the recipes so that they can easily be recreated at home. And with all the fresh garnishes my kids can choose from, they’ll all have a different soup. Such a great idea to have a single soup base and let my kids add the ingredients they want.

The restaurant will also have a mosaic wall where we can place a sticker, and for every sticker placed Campbell’s Canada will be donating a can of soup to the Daily Bread Food Bank.

If you check out the pop-up restaurant, don’t forget to share your soup creation using #weallsoup.

EVENT DATES: Tuesday, February 2nd  – Sunday, February 21st
WHERE: 501 Queen Street West, Toronto

Monday – Friday 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Which Countries have the Most Work to do? #COP21

Amazing Events - Mama 1 - January 5, 2016

Being a mom means I don’t often have the time to step out and take a look at events that are happening in the world around us. So I find it really important that I make the time to learn about what’s going on, and sometimes that may be only learning about one world event a day.

So if you’re like me, I wanted to take this opportunity to share a little world news with you. Last month, world leaders met in Paris to discuss climate change and what actions needed to happen. And one of the big things was that we need to take steps to help ensure is that the average global temperature doesn’t rise more than 2°. And while a warmer winter seems like a nice thing, we need all that snow, and the water that melts off from it, and higher temperatures in the summer could become too hot for plant and wildlife. Rising global temperatures have a greater effect than just giving us longer summers/milder winters.

Carbon emissions cause a lot of the overall warming, and different countries produce varying degrees of carbon. While China has the highest overall fossil fuel use, North America has one of the highest per capita.

So what does that mean for us? Well, each country is responsible for creating a climate action plan to be completed by 2018. But we shouldn’t wait until 2018 to start thinking about our own personal carbon footprint. Turning down the temperature in the house, driving less, and even using reusable shopping bags can all have an impact.

What will you do in 2016 to lessen your carbon footprint?

Support Food Banks #HungerCount

Amazing Events - Mama 1 - November 17, 2015

On Tuesday, November 17th, the annual Hunger Counts report was released. HungerCount is the only comprehensive annual national report on hunger and food banks used in Canada.

In March 2015, 852,137 people received food from a food bank in Canada. More than one-third of those helped were children.

Food bank use in March was 1.3% higher compared to the same period in 2014 and 26% higher than in 2008, before the start of the global financial crisis. Half of the provinces experienced increases in food bank use in 2015. Hardest hit was Alberta, where unemployment increased by 10% between March 2014 and 2015 in the wake of the dropping price of oil. Three-quarters of food banks in this province reported an increase in use. Nationally, 54% of food banks reported an increase in the number of people requesting food assistance.

It has now been seven years since food bank use reached a low point of 675,735 individuals in March 2008. The need for food banks spiked drastically in 2009 and has hovered at record levels ever since.

Help share these statistics to raise awareness about hunger in Canada! Read more at https://www.foodbankscanada.ca/Hunger-in-Canada/HungerCount-2015.aspx

Beauty Gives Back: #SDMBeautyGala

Amazing Events - Mama 1 - October 22, 2015

As I jump back into blogging, I wanted to share with you an incredible event coming up on November 7.

It’s the Beauty Gala, hosted at participating Shoppers Drug Mart, and it’s in support of Beauty Gives Back.

Beauty Gives Back’s mandate is to:

…dedicate ourselves to treating the emotional fallout from cancer. Using the sum total of our knowledge, experience, expertise and resources, we do what women trust and rely on us to do – to make them feel human again in the face of the ravages of cancer and its treatment. In doing so, we help restore their confidence, and the confidence of those around them, to continue fighting with conviction and living with dignity.

Tickets for the Beauty Gala are only $10, with $5 going towards Beauty Gives Back, and $5 for guests to redeem on any purchase they make during the evening. It’s sure to be a great event with skincare consultations, makeovers, free samples, and of course, refreshments.

Make sure to visit your local Shoppers Drug Mart (in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Newfoundland)  to find out if they’ll be hosting the event, and to get your tickets.

You can also join Beauty Gives Back for a Twitter party Tuesday, November 3, to help raise awareness about the gala (and Beauty Gives Back). The party is on from 8-8:30pm EST, and Sherry Abbott, Director of Beauty Gives Back and an ovarian cancer survivor will also be joining the conversation.

We hope you’ll join us and use #SDMBeautyGala.
